Parfum Extrait
Birch Leaf, Myrrh, Olive Fruit Absolute, benzoin, Calamus, Cypriol, Cassia, port Oxford cedar, labdanum, Ubame oak, high temperature molecular distillation of royal hojari frankincense, Hybred Beyo Carterii Sacra Frankincense Absolute, Tinctures of Ethiopian Papyri Fera, Boswellia So Contrana and Manifur Rivae FrankincenseHe had left the little bottle beside the washbasin, where it remained for three days, although he had been asked twice to remove it. The room smelled of damp plaster and the bitter smoke of the stove. There was something else, too: the peculiar green bitterness of crushed birch leaves, the medicinal sweetness of myrrh, and beneath it a dark, almost edible resin that clung to the collar of his coat. He had acquired it from a man whose fingernails were black and who spoke of Jerusalem with considerable irritation.
On the fourth evening, his sister picked up the bottle and accused him of having brought something unclean into the house. He laughed, rather too loudly. She had always been frightened of incense, though as a child she had stolen the frankincense from their mother's icon corner and eaten a small piece of it. He remembered this suddenly and felt ashamed of laughing.
