Armoise, Lime, Oud, Cedarwood Virginia, Douglas Fir, Orris Butter, Tonka Absolute, Labdanum, Deer Musk, Ambergris, Oakmoss Absolute, Vetiver Haiti, Mysore SandalwoodThe road out of the yard ran through armoise, grey and bitter, and a man who brushed against it carried the bitterness on his knees. At the gate a lime was cut for the journey. The rind was sharp and did not travel far.
Past the gate came the fir, and past the fir the cedar, drier than the fir, as a plank is drier than a branch. Oud lay between them, black and resinous, with something of the animal in it that never came out of the wood.
Lower down, oakmoss grew wet on the stones, and vetiver was pulled from the bank with the earth still on its roots. Orris was in the pouch at his belt, a cool powder. Tonka went in beside it, sweet, and labdanum, sticky as pitch.
The road came back to the yard by evening. The lime was gone. Musk and ambergris were on the coat, and the sandalwood was in the chest where the coat was hung.
